Towards the far south of Sri Lanka is Kataragama which is considered a divine place by the locals is much visited by foreigners too. It is situated close to Yala Wildlife Reserve on the banks of the Manic Ganga. When visiting the Kataragama shrine, making a small deviation to Vedihitikanda will not disappoint if you are looking for a vibrant display of Lankan religions and culture.
The journey begins at the foot of the great hill where vendors sell colourful flowers to offer to God when you reach the temple. All the activity taking place in the surroundings numb the tiredness that comes from climbing the steep hill. You will eventually make your way to a staircase which contains 1000 steps. As you take your time climbing the steps and soaking in the scenery, you’ll end up at the summit before you know it! Once here, watch as the devotees pay homage to various Gods. If you are planning your tour here, enjoy stays at some of the best hotels. In Kataragama, accommodation options like Mandara Rosen Kataragama are popular among visitors both locals and foreigners.
