Thai Pongal Celebrated in Sri Lanka – A Harvest Festival with Rich Traditions

In January, the Hindu community in Sri Lanka celebrated Thai Pongal with the many traditions and age-old rituals associated with this annual harvest festival. It was held on the first day of the month of Thai in the traditional Tamil calendar and this year, it fell on 15th January 2024. The festival is dedicated to the Hindu Sun God and traditionally, also signifies gratitude for a bountiful harvest. Interestingly, the word ‘Pongal’ translates to ‘boil over’ and this is part of the custom where rice is boiled in milk and other ingredients in a clay pot till it overflows.

During Thai Pongal, many other customs were observed as well; these included creating kolam artworks with coloured rice and flour, offering prayers at Hindu kovils and homes, and getting together with families and friends to share in meals and exchange gifts. In traditional agricultural communities, cattle were also honoured due to the pivotal role they played in helping farmers in the paddy fields. While the festivities are held over several days, the official day of Thai Pongal is a public holiday in Sri Lanka. Locals and tourists looking to get away from the city and experience the serenity of nature at such times can enjoy stays at the best hotels in Gal Oya. Set amidst unspoiled natural surroundings, options such as Wild Glamping Gal Oya which features luxury tents continue to offer unique accommodations during these cultural festivals.
