Thaipoosam Cavadee This Month in Mauritius – A Key Celebration for Hindus

This month will see the celebration of the festival known as Thaipoosam Cavadee in countries such as Mauritius which has a sizable Hindu population. This year, the event which is held to honour the deity, Lord Murugan, falls on 25th January 2024 and it will be a public holiday in Mauritius. Hotel deals can be found at properties here such as Anantara Iko Mauritius Resort & Villas which makes an ideal base to experience the local culture during such events.

Interestingly, 10 days before the festival, a flag-hoisting ceremony is held, and many devotees abstain from eating meat during this period which leads up to the main celebration. As part of the traditions of Thaipoosam Cavadee, Hindus will visit temples where they recite prayers to Lord Murugan and make offerings including flowers, milk, and fruit; being purified with holy water by a priest is another key custom during this time. It is also customary for various processions and religious rituals to take place which visitors can look to observe as they experience this distinctive cultural event.
