The Chinese Spring Festival in Mauritius – A unique festival for the country

In Mauritius, the Chinese Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is a festive occasion observed by the local Chinese community in accordance with the traditional Chinese lunar calendar. Although the exact date on the widely used Gregorian calendar falls around January or February, the celebration is deeply rooted in ancient Chinese autumn traditions, and is considered one of the best things to do in Mauritius that only comes once a year.

Notably, in Mauritius, where the Chinese community is relatively small, the Spring Festival is recognized as a national public holiday, making it the only country outside of Asia to commemorate Chinese New Year with a public holiday. The focal point of the celebration unfolds in Port Louis’ Chinatown, characterised by vibrant parades showcasing traditional New Year costumes as well as visitors from places such as the Anantara Iko Mauritius Resort & Villas.
