Kandy Esala Perahera

The Kandy Esala Perahera – An important celebration for everything Sri Lankan!

Labeled as one of the largest and most important Buddhist festivals in the country, the Kandy Esala Perahera was held to celebrate to pay respects to an equally, if not more important relic of the Buddhist faith – the Tooth Relic of the Lord Buddha. During this Esala period, processions took to the streets for 10 days, where a parade of performing musicians, dancers, and even well-dressed elephants made their way through the nights. Held during August, there is no ticket, and it is easily accessible for most onlookers.

As Kandy can be considered one of the more popular destinations in Sri Lanka, most visitors will be able to find decent accommodations, like those belonging to popular local hospitality chains such as the Thema Collection for their overnight stay. Planning ahead is key, especially for those eager to witness this event, as the dates attract substantial crowds, making early reservations essential for a seamless and delightful visit.
