The Maldives Celebrates Eid al-Fitr – A Time for Thanksgiving & Celebrations

This month, as done in other Muslim nations and communities, the Maldives celebrated Eid al-Fitr which marked the end of the month of fasting and prayer known as Ramadan. The exact day of this festival falls on the sighting of the crescent moon following Ramadan and this year, in the Maldives, it was on 2nd May which was a public holiday. Apart from the festivities, it’s also a time that Muslims will help the poor and this donation is known as “Zakat-al-Fitr”.

Other observances during this time include attending the mosque in the morning to offer the Eid prayer; it’s also a joyous occasion where one will wear new clothes, while family and friends get together to share grand meals and play traditional festive games too. Some of the best resorts in Maldives also celebrate this festival and offer special deals or packages during this period; these include the likes of Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives which provide private island holidays catering to both families and couples.
