The Maldives Expects to Give Life to a Vibrant Floating City in its Battle against the Global Climate Change

In the battle against rising sea levels, the Maldives – a charming archipelago in the Indian Ocean is collaborating with a Netherland company called Dutch Docklands to give life to what is called a ‘floating city’. This exotic floating city, the first ever of its kind is to be perched in a stunning lagoon, a 10-minute boat ride away from Male – Maldives’ capital city. The city is anticipated to provide housing for over 20,000 residents and the country is hopeful that the first set of residents will arrive by 2024.

The city is predicted to take the shape of a coral and will be built over a flexible connected grid on the water. All the properties including restaurants, shops and schools will be waterfront and surrounded by natural and purpose-grown coral reefs. Thus, the unique floating city will literally and metaphorically float with nature instead of harming it to rise above. This paradise-like island has always taken its sustainable initiatives to the heart and has actively contributed to the fight against global climate change. In Fact, there are ample Maldives 5-star resorts the likes of Amilla Maldives Resort & Residencies that are steered by sustainable operations be it via organic home gardens or homemade bath products, delicacies and bath products.
