The Spectacular Duruthu Maha Perahera in Kelaniya – an experience like no other

In commemoration of Lord Buddha’s visit to Lanka in the month of January also known as Duruthu, the Kelani Vihara organizes an annual perahera. A perahera is a religious observance in which relics that are safeguarded in temples around Sri Lanka are paraded in keeping with Buddhist and Hindu rituals. On the day of the Duruthu Maha Perahera in Kelaniya, the streets stream with participants, onlookers and curious tourists. It is a spectacular display of all elements that contribute towards Sri Lankan culture. The perahera is held on the pre- full moon poya day in January. However, in preparation for the perahera religious observances are conducted throughout December and January. The perahera itself consists of four parts, which is led by the showcasing of the tooth relic. Those that follow venerate the Hindu gods, Vishnu, Kataragama and Vibhishana.
