The sports in Kandy has a rewarding history from time immemorial. It still maintains a proud record of producing some of the top-level sportsmen for a wide range of sports like football, cricket, rugby, and athletics. With an aim of increasing the participation in sports in the central province, the Mayor of Kandy, Kessara Senanayake has planned to initiate a programme called ‘Sports Unites’ to improve the mental and physical health of people. He has also taken steps to improve facilities and resources in many Kandy sports clubs. Many Kandy hotels the likes of Amaya Hills, offers numerous indoor sports activities like table tennis and snooker for all holidaymakers to reduce stress and isolation. The Mayor further emphasized that the increased participation in sports activities will boost social integration and it will improve self-esteem among people to maintain a cordial rapport between people in different communities.
