Uber, a tech giant, and industry pioneer has announced its plan to launch a helicopter service – titled Uber Air – with the Australian city of Melbourne serving as the first major trial location. This announcement comes in the wake of a previously leaked document that revealed Uber’s ambitions for flight service. This document also detailed that the company aims to maintain its flights at an altitude of 75m and a range of up to 96km.
Several Melbourne government officials have praised this plan; Victoria’s Assistant Treasurer Robin Scot MP remarked that Uber Air has the chance to become an integral part of the city’s transportation system in the near future. Former Liberal party MP, Clem Newton Brown expressed that for Uber Air to properly take off, major buildings will need to provide appropriate infrastructure for airborne taxis. That is to say, something like a major apartment hotel in Melbourne, such as the Citadines on Bourke Melbourne, will need to construct landing spaces for helicopters.
