Whale Watching in Mirissa – The Season for Adventures at Sea

Beginning from December and running up to April, the whale watching season in Sri Lanka’s South Coast sees locals and foreign visitors alike flock to key areas for such excursions like Mirissa. January is one of the peak months for whale and dolphin watching which can be enjoyed in the seas around the South Coast. Mirissa Harbour is one of the main points for excursions and an option for travellers who are unable to find accommodation in Mirissa itself would be to stay at well placed Galle hotels such as Jetwing Lighthouse and make their way to the harbour for an early morning whale watching trip. Among the species one has the chance of spotting while whale watching in Mirissa include sperm whales, blue whales and Bryde’s whales, while spinner, bottle nose and common dolphins can also be seen in the waters around Mirissa Harbour.
