The construction of the world’s first floating city is set to begin in January 2023 and will be a unique and eco-friendly development in the country. This was highlighted on the EIN Presswire website on 21st October 2022 along with the fact that it will also address the concerns of climate change and the threat of rising sea levels. This project is a collaboration between the Maldives government and Dutch Docklands and construction is set to take around five years.
When complete, this mini city near the capital, Male, is expected to have 5,000 housing units linked to a floating floor of a shallow area that covers around 500 acres; it will come complete with dining venues, and shops, while being a car-free area with canals and roadways of natural white-sand that can be traversed by bicycles, foot, mobility scooters or electrical buggies. While this is a key eco-friendly project, such initiatives can also be seen when staying at a resort in Maldives with sustainability measures in place. Examples include Dhigali Maldives which has preserved its island’s original vegetation while also featuring a sewerage treatment plant as well as focusing on recycling water, reducing plastic usage, recycling cardboard boxes and Styrofoam and more.
