Balancing Growth with Green Initiatives in Zanzibar’s Tourism Sector
Zanzibar’s tourism sector is experiencing unprecedented growth, with international arrivals reaching a record 736,755 in 2024 — a 15.4% increase from the previous year. This surge underscores the island’s rising appeal as a premier African destination.
In response to this influx, the government is emphasising the importance of sustainable tourism practices. Minister for Tourism and Heritage, Mudrik Ramadhan Soraga, highlighted the necessity of environmental preservation to maintain Zanzibar’s global appeal. He stressed that conservation is a critical pillar for sustaining the island’s natural assets, such as its pristine beaches, lush forests, and vibrant marine ecosystems.
The government is actively engaging various stakeholders, including the private sector, civil society, academia, and international organisations, to address environmental challenges such as waste management, deforestation, and marine degradation. This collaborative approach aims to ensure that Zanzibar’s tourism development aligns with ecological sustainability.
As part of its commitment to sustainable tourism, Zanzibar is encouraging the development of eco-friendly accommodations. Establishments like The Residence Zanzibar exemplify this initiative, offering luxury experiences that harmonise with the island’s natural surroundings. Such five star hotels in Zanzibar are pivotal in setting benchmarks for sustainable hospitality, integrating green technologies and practices to minimise environmental impact.
The government’s strategic focus on eco-friendly tourism aims to position Zanzibar as a leading destination that not only attracts visitors but also preserves its unique environmental heritage for future generations.
