Community-based tourism in the Maldives is becoming increasingly popular and has an important role to play in the local tourism industry; this was put in the spotlight on 16th February 2023 on the Much Better Adventures website which also discussed how it can benefit Maldivians. Amongst the aspects which were focused on was how guesthouses on local islands are catering to tourists in search of more cultural experiences.
That said, the website additionally highlighted how the established resorts also have a role to play; this includes knowledge-sharing with local businesses as well as offering authentic cultural experiences which cater to the demand of modern travellers heading to the Maldives. 5-star resort amenities aside, luxury private island properties like Hard Rock Hotel Maldives offer local island visits with a guide and access to the Maldives Discovery Centre where guests can learn about Maldivian culture and livelihoods.
