Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrations in Mauritius – Vibrant festivities

Mauritius is a melting pot of cultures with its citizens comprising of African, Indian, Chinese and European origin. While living together in harmony, people of different faiths have the freedom to celebrate their special occasions on a grand scale.

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated by the Marathi people of the country. It is a festival that honours the Hindu god Ganesha and takes place over a period of 10 days. A statue of the god, often made of clay is installed in houses of devotees. On the final day, the statues are immersed in the river or sea across the island. On the eve of the final day when the festivities truly begin with singing and dancing and lots of lovely sweets.
