Khmer New Year 2024: Celebrating Tradition and Unity

Khmer New Year, known as ‘Chaul Chnam Thmey’ in Khmer, marks a vibrant three-day celebration in Cambodia. Falling on either April 13th or 14th, this holiday reflects the nation’s rich cultural heritage and traditional values. The first day, Maha Songkran, symbolises creation, where homes are meticulously cleaned, illuminated with candles, and adorned with Buddha idols to welcome divine angels.

Vanabot, the second day, emphasises compassion and charity towards the less fortunate. Families visit monasteries to honor ancestors and exchange heartfelt gifts. Leang Saka, the final day, sees Buddhists cleansing Buddha statues with scented water to ensure prosperity and abundance for Cambodia. Children lovingly bathe their elders, seeking blessings and guidance for the year ahead.

As Cambodians unite to observe these time-honoured customs, Khmer New Year stands as a testament to resilience, community, and the enduring spirit of the Cambodian people. For guests enjoying a pleasant vacation in Cambodia, places like FCC Angkor by Avani, one of the best hotels in Siem Reap, offer a perfect blend of luxury and cultural immersion during the celebrations.
