The hill station of Nuwara Eliya, normally associated with quiet family holidays at one of the charming Nuwara Eliya Hotels that dot the hillside, such as the Jetwing St. Andrews, came alive as the Royal Turf Club concluded their annual Christmas Race Day tournament, on 11th December 2016. A Christmas themed, gala party marked the start of the races, and was followed up with a total of seven exhilarating races, with the main being the ‘Christmas Gold Cup’ for racehorses in the highest class. The thunder of hooves set hearts pounding, throughout the day, but in the end, the Christmas Gold Cup was won by a dazzling mare, owned by Deepthika Jayakody, who crept up from the rear and won the cup in grand style. A high fashion show and a visit from Santa Clause for the kids ended the evening.
