As part of a special campaign titled Visit Maldives Year (VMY) 2016, which will kick start in the New Year the country will host a wide range of events including an international surfing competition. A total of $10 million has been set aside in 2016 to be used for tourism promotion in the Maldives and the MMPRC or Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation has planned other events as well that will target foreign visitors. The country is one of the most popular destinations for travellers seeking island holidays and who can stay atMaldives resort getaways such as PER AQUUM Niyama. Other events planned for 2016 include the Tourist Arrival Countdown Show, a Free Diving Competition which will be the first such event held in South Asia and a special programme which will offer every 100,000th visitor to the island nation a variety of surprises and VIP treatment.
