Celebrated since ancient times the Esala Perahera in Kataragama is a must attend by all who visits the country during the month of July and August. The rituals of the Perahera start from the 1st of July. This year the flag hosting of the Perahera will take place on the 17th of July and the main Perahera is scheduled to take place on the 31st of July. Visitors to the country could find accommodation at one of the featured Yala hotels such as Jetwing Yala that is located in the vicinity of the village of Kataragama.
The fire walking ceremony of the Perahera is one of its highlights, where pilgrims of religious faith walk over burning logs. It is the belief of the pilgrims that their devotion prevents them from being burned from the hot embers. Another highlight the travellers could witness during the festival is the famous kaawadi dances with colourfully attired dancers keep the spectators mesmerized.
