Nikini full moon Poya takes place in the ninth month of the Sinhalese calendar, meaning it falls in August on the Gregorian calendar. Poya days are prestigious Buddhist days that take place on the full moon of each month. They usually commemorate an important moment in Buddhist history and are declared public holidays, with the sale of alcohol and meat being banned on these holy days.
Nikini Poya marks the first Dhamma Sangayana (the first Buddhist Council), which took place following the passing away of Lord Buddha. The council met to preserve the teachings of the Buddha and was held in the Sattapanni caves, Rajgriha, headed by Venerable Mahakasyapa and patronaged by King Ajatashatru. Travelers who visit Sri Lanka can witness the religious gatherings that take place, most notably in the South, where you can find many temples near hotels in Matara. Tourists can visit a temple or converse with some local folk while staying at establishments such as Dickwella Resort & Spa, to understand the significance of these important days.
