The Lusaka Peace Agreement Day, also known as Victory Day, is a public holiday in Mozambique celebrated on September 7th. The day commemorates the signing of the Lusaka Peace Agreement in 1974, which saw the conclusion of the Mozambican War of Independence. Most of Mozambique’s public holidays revolve around its struggles for independence from colonial rule.
The Portuguese first entered the country in the 15th century, and by the 16th century, they had commanded the seas around the region quite dominantly. Fast forward to 1964, with growing hostility in the Portuguese colonies against the colonisers, armed guerilla warfare erupted in defiance of the Portuguese. Following a more democratic shift in Portugal, its colonies were granted independence. These events are celebrated to this day with parades and festivals, and visitors have a great time travelling to the island and participating in them. Along with beach stays in Mozambique, luxury beach resorts here provide easy access to these festivals, with properties such as Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort providing a good platform to launch these activities from.
