Ramadan, the ninth month of the Muslim Calendar, is a fasting month for Muslims in Maldives. This religious festival lasts an entire month and devotees spend their time with their full focus on contemplation and worship with little focus to the concerns of day-to-day life. Strict restraints are places on Muslims’ lives during the Ramadan fast. They are forbidden from eating or drinking anything during daylight hours. They are also forbidden from engaging in sexual relations during the fasting period. Each fast day is ended with a meal named iftar after which, Muslims visit their friends and family. The traditions of Ramadan are not only practiced at households but also at professional establishments such as luxury hotels Maldives. For instance, the guests at a resort such as the PER AQUUM Huvafen Fushi can enjoy popular traditional Muslim dishes during Iftar time. Some restaurant offer special Iftar meals and family offers during Ramadan. At the start of the next lunar month, Ramadan is concluded on Eid-ulFitr. This day is declared when the crescent new moon makes its first appearance after 30 days of fasting.
